International Women’s Day 2010
Author Homa Sabet Tavangar to speak at local International Women’s Day celebrationFORT WAYNE – Organizers of the 2010 observance of International Women’s Day promise this will be one of the best celebrations ever. The sixth annual Fort Wayne event and the ninety-ninth observance of the international event – will be held Thursday, March 4th from 5:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m. at Andorfer Commons on the campus of Indiana Tech on Washington Boulevard just east of downtown Fort Wayne. The evening will offer the usual treats—hand massages, chair massages, native dance performances, food, a silent auction and a great time to get together with friends.

This year’s event will also feature guest speaker and author Homa Sabet Tavangar. Born in Tehran, Iran, Homa’s family moved to the United States when she was just over a year old. The family first moved to Cleveland but later lived in Fort Wayne. Along with Iran, Homa has lived in East and West Africa, South America, and throughout the United States. In addition to English, she speaks Persian (Farsi), Spanish, Portuguese, and rudimentary French and Swahili. She holds undergraduate and graduate degrees in International Economics, and International Development and Public Affairs from UCLA and Princeton University. She spent one pivotal year studying at The Catholic University in Lima, Peru, and criss-crossing the lower two-thirds of South America. Her religious heritage includes four of the world’s major faiths, and she has family living on every continent.
Homa is author of the new, highly acclaimed Random House book, Growing Up Global: Raising Children to Be At Home in the World. The book is based on her experience living in West Africa with her young daughters from January to April of 2007. Homa wrote her book after blogging her experiences for the Philadelphia Enquirer.
